The Drone Day Test
I shoot real estate drone footage. A typical day means flying 5-6 batteries through my Mavic 3. Each battery is about 60Wh. The River 2 (256Wh) charged all six batteries — plus my phone, plus my controller — and still had 15% left. And when I got back to the car, I plugged the River 2 into the 12V outlet and it was fully recharged in 60 minutes. That's the magic of this thing.
🔋 LFP Battery — 3,000 Cycles
A decade of use. Older NMC stations like the Jackery Explorer 500 only manage 500 cycles.
⚡ 1-Hour AC Charging
0-100% in 60 minutes. Recharge during a meal stop.
🕹️ 7.7 lbs
Genuinely portable. Fits in a backpack. One-hand carry.
📱 X-Boost to 600W
Runs small appliances that other 300W units can't.
What We Love
- 7.7 lbs — disappears into a backpack or camera bag
- 1-hour charging — 0-100% in 60 minutes, 80% in 40 minutes
- LFP battery — 3,000 cycles, a full decade of use
- X-Boost to 600W — runs small microwaves, hair dryers (barely)
- USB-C with 100W output — charges laptops at full speed
- Built-in LED light with SOS — actually useful for camping
- EcoFlow app is excellent — real-time monitoring, remote control
- 5-year warranty — EcoFlow stands behind it
The Honest Drawbacks
- Only 256Wh — enough for a weekend, not for home backup
- Single AC outlet — you'll need a power strip
- X-Boost not pure sine wave — sensitive electronics may buzz
- No pass-through charging — can't use while charging
- Fan noise above 400W — noticeable in a quiet room
- Not expandable — what you buy is what you get
The CPAP Overnight Test
I loaned the River 2 to a friend who uses a CPAP (ResMed AirSense 10, no humidifier, 55W average). It ran for 4.5 hours — almost a full night. For a weekend camper with a CPAP, that's enough if you recharge during the day. With humidifier (90W), runtime drops to 2.5 hours — still enough for a nap or short night.
But the EPS (Emergency Power Supply) switchover is 30ms — not fast enough for CPAPs that reboot on power loss. If you need true UPS, look at the Anker SOLIX C800 (sub-10ms).
⚠️ 256Wh Is Small — Know Your Limits
The River 2 is not a home backup station. It's for phones, laptops, cameras, drones, CPAP (short nights), and small appliances. If you need to run a fridge or a full home office, buy the EcoFlow Delta 2 (1,024Wh) or step up to the EcoFlow Delta 3 (1,024Wh, faster charging).
The Surprise: X-Boost Actually Works (Sometimes)
I ran a 600W microwave off the River 2 using X-Boost. It worked — but the microwave took twice as long to heat a cup of water, and the fan on the River 2 screamed the whole time (50dB+). For emergencies, it's fine. For daily use, it's annoying and inefficient.
What No One Tells You
The River 2 has no pass-through charging. You cannot charge it while using the AC outlet. If it's dead and you plug it in, the AC outlet stays off. For a desk UPS setup, that's a problem — your PC will reboot while the River 2 recharges.
Also, the single AC outlet is limiting. For $200, I shouldn't need to carry a power strip.
⚠️ 30ms EPS — Not a True UPS
EcoFlow calls it "EPS" (Emergency Power Supply) for a reason. At 30ms, many sensitive devices (CPAPs, some PC power supplies) will reboot. If you need true UPS, buy the Anker SOLIX C800 (sub-10ms).

⚡ LFP vs NMC — Why This Matters at This Size
The older Jackery Explorer 500 uses an NMC battery with ~500 cycles. The River 2 uses LFP with 3,000 cycles — six times the lifespan at a similar price. For a station you'll use frequently, the chemistry difference pays off within 2-3 years of regular use.
AC Fast Charging — 1 Hour to Full
The River 2 pulls 200W from a wall outlet, hitting 80% in 40 minutes and a full charge in 60 minutes. Compare that to the Jackery Explorer 500 (7+ hours) or Bluetti EB3A (1.5 hours but smaller battery). Even the Jackery Explorer 300 Plus — a direct competitor — takes 2 hours.
Solar Charging — Adequate
With 110W max solar input, the River 2 recharges fully in about 3-4 hours of peak sun with a matching panel. Fine for a station this size — you're not going off-grid for weeks with 256Wh anyway.
Car Charging — 4-5 Hours
From your vehicle's 12V port, expect 4-5 hours. Fine for road trips where you're driving between destinations.
The Pass-Through Problem
You cannot charge the River 2 while using the AC outlet. If you're using it as a desk UPS and the power goes out, it works great. But once the battery is low and you plug it back in, your PC will reboot. That's a real limitation compared to the Anker C300 (which supports pass-through).
What 300W (and 600W X-Boost) Gets You
The River 2 delivers 300W continuous output with a 600W X-Boost rating. Here's what that means in practice:
- ✅ Smartphones (20W) — 12+ charges
- ✅ Laptop (60W) — 4 full charges
- ✅ Drone batteries (60Wh each) — 4 charges
- ✅ CPAP (no humidifier, 55W) — 4.5 hours
- ✅ Portable speaker (20W) — 12+ hours
- ✅ LED lights (10W) — 25+ hours
- ✅ Small TV (50W) — 5 hours
- ⚠️ CPAP with humidifier (90W) — 2.5 hours
- ⚠️ Small microwave (600W) — runs but slowly and loudly
- ❌ Hair dryer (1,800W) — impossible
- ❌ Space heater (1,500W) — impossible
The Drone Charger Test
I fly a Mavic 3 with six batteries (60Wh each, 360Wh total). The River 2 (256Wh) charged all six batteries to 80% before dying. With careful management (charging batteries in sequence, not all at once), I got a full day of flying.
⚠️ X-Boost Not for Sensitive Electronics
When X-Boost is active, total harmonic distortion (THD) rises above 5%. Your CPAP may buzz. Your camera battery charger may act weird. For sensitive devices, disable X-Boost and stay under 300W.
✈️ Drone Photographers/Videographers
Charges 4-6 drone batteries per day. Fits in a camera bag. Fast recharge between flights.
🩺 CPAP Users (No Humidifier, Short Nights)
4.5 hours of runtime. Recharge during the day. Perfect for weekend camping.
💻 Remote Workers (Laptop + Phone)
4 laptop charges, 12+ phone charges. Tiny enough to throw in a work bag.
🏕️ Weekend Campers (Low Power)
Runs lights, phones, speakers, and a small fan for a weekend.
❌ Home Backup Users
256Wh is not enough for a fridge or freezer. Buy the EcoFlow Delta 2 instead.
❌ CPAP Users (Humidifier, Full Night)
2.5 hours of runtime with humidifier. Not enough. Step up to the EcoFlow Delta 3 (1,024Wh).
The 2026 Recommendation
The River 2 is the best small power station you can buy. It beats the Jackery Explorer 300 Plus on charge speed (1-hour vs 2-hour) and the older Explorer 500 on battery longevity (LFP vs NMC). Unless you need extreme cold weather performance (Jackery Explorer 300 Plus wins there) or a true UPS with pass-through (Anker C300), buy the River 2.
What EcoFlow Got Right
The River 2 is the best small power station on the market. At 7.7 lbs with 256Wh, 1-hour charging, and LFP battery technology, it outperforms every competitor in its class on the metrics that matter most for portable use.
What Still Needs Work
Single AC outlet is limiting. No pass-through charging is annoying for desk use. And X-Boost's modified waveform means you can't use it for sensitive electronics without caution.
The Verdict
If you need a small, fast-charging station for drones, laptops, phones, or short CPAP nights — the River 2 is the obvious choice. It's not for home backup. But for portable power, nothing else at this size comes close.
